Gift Ideas for the Organic Gardener

by Steve on November 30, 2010

Now that the Thanksgiving Holidays are past, many of us are beginning to think of gift lists for our friends and families, and making wishlists of our own.

But why be like the thousands of other shoppers and head to the malls for ideas and fulfillment of those gifts you want to buy?

Farm Feed Store

My home away from home

One of the best gifts you can give is something you made with your own hands.  Now I understand completely that the kids may be angling for the latest Xbox or Wii game, but if you have older members you are hunting ideas for, give it some thought.

Do you have a digital camera and some favorite photos?  Upload them to http://www.mpix.com for soem pretty cool gifts at very reasonable prices.

I have used Mpix for a couple of years now, as I shoot a lot of ouotdoor landscape photos.   I found the=at at Mpix, you can order standard prints of almost any size, Photo Books, Calendars,  almost anything you can imagine.

No, I receive no compensation, I am just a very happy customer.

Another Idea is to hand paint some patterns on a ceramic pot you get pick up

(or already own) for your patio. Iet the kids involved.  You can find safe latex paint, or Finger paint.  have the kids help paint and place hand prints on the pot.   I’ll bet it becomes your favorite family pot.

Video of yourself telling them how much they mean tI did this one a few years back.   Shoot a video telling that special other what they mean to you.  Burn it to a DVD and have it set to watch on Christmas Eve or morning, depending on your customs.

And finally, my favorite place for ideas and farm items is my local Feed Store.

Yes, I know it may seem strange to some, but think of it.  They have clothing items made to handle the wear and tear of farm life.   There are tools that you don’t think you will ever need – until something breaks.

They have Canning Supplies and tools ( how about a new tomato press for next years canning season?), organic supplements, Rabbit Cages if you are thinking of a new kind of livestock, Riding gear for your horses, ( well, this is Texas, you know)

If you need some more ideas, please listen to our latest podcast “Growing Your Grub, Episode 7″ for some descriptions of more potential Gardening Gift ideas.

Garden Therapy

by Steve on November 29, 2010

in Blog

OK, let’s talk straight here.   What, besides unbelievably fresh food do you get from your garden?  After all, there are weeds, insects, plants that don’t perform, and too many other things to mention.

For me – it’s Therapy.  Hands down, it’s the best escape I have found to escape from the “stuff” that happens throughout the day.

Nothing Beats Fresh Tomatoes!

Whether the temps are cold and the wind is blowing, or it’s a hundred degrees and humid, I still can find no better way to pass the time and let my problems go.

Have an argument with someone at work?  Grab your trowel or hori-hori knife and take it out on some weeds.  Not only will your forget the altercation, but you’ll feel good about the damage you’ve done to your weeds.

Feeling a little depressed over something?   Grab a cup of tea, or a glass of lemonade depending on the time of year and grab a seat somewhere in your garden.   Just sit and look.  Breath deep.   Ahhhhhh    See how good that felt?

Have you just completed some milestone in your life, and want to celebrate?   How about treating yourself to one of the little garden gadgets you’ve always wanted?

And if you are having major issues in your life, and need a giant jump start to your well being, try a visit to your local Botanical Garden or Public Gardens.   You can get new ideas for your own garden, see some beautiful plants, and probably meet some new friends there too.

They’re probably there for the same reason you are – Garden Therapy.
