This week we have a real treat. I had the opportunity to bring Linna Ferguson in to speak with us about Being a Locavore and why.
Linna is
- Certified Square Food Gardener
- Motivational Speaker on Local Food
- Columnist for www Examiner.com
- Has been on the Emeril Green TV Show as an expert
- She has her blog at www.foodscaper.com
Best of all, she was a lot of fun to listen to.

Hi Steve,
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Linna. What I took away from this interview is a broadening of my definition of locavore. Sometimes we can’t eat ultra-local, and so Linna raised my awareness with continental distinction. Having worked next door to Chez Panisse with all these ex-CPers, I think I had a narrow, but sometimes unworkable definition of local. Of course, it’s ideal, but I, personally, can’t always do it.
Thanks for the thought provoking interview.
I am so glad to hear that, Mil. That was one of the take-aways I had too. We can’t always be as 100% as we would like, but some decisions are better than others when taken in relation to each other. For example, if we can’t buy extremely local, then, the closer the better.
Eating within the season is another important aspect. Here in North America, we need to stop expecting to have tomatoes and grapes in January and be fresh too. Chef Keith Snow has an entire cookbook just speaking to the issue of getting back to eating what’s in season.
Great episode! Linna makes it sounds so accessible. She certainly motivated me
Glad Linna motivated you, that was our goal. We are planning on doing another later in the year as the season wraps up.
I visited your blog too, and I really liked it. I am an avid cook too ( it’s what got me into growing better food) so loved those recipes!
Thanks for listening and taking time to comment.
I am a first time Gardner this year. Linna Ferguson has been my inspiration. Her articles & blog and now podcast help take a lot of the fear away from the learning curve. Thank you for having her on.
Thanks for commenting. Glad to hear you’re getting into a garden. I had a wonderful time speaking with Linna and we are already talking about another session later in the season. I hope you’ll give the other episodes a listen too.
