Recently a listener pointed me to a short video on Youtube where author Kristy Athens was talking about her new book, “Get Your Book CoverPitchfork On!”.

While the book discusses many aspects of Homesteading and Rural Living, it did have a substantial section on natural gardening and I thought you might like to hear from her.

As a result of the listener’s suggestion, and after a review of the book I contacted the author who was happy to come on the show and visit with us.

While the subject may be a bit broader than the simple home gardening we normally cover, she has lessons that can benefit all of us, no matter where we garden. As Kristy says, not everyone is willing to give up everything when they move to the country. ( Internet, any one?)

I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed talking with Kristy.

PS: This shows the importance of listener feedback and suggestions for authors you would like to hear from. If I can get them to come on the show, it does make for some interesting discussions.

I’ve heard that tomatoes need night temps of 55 or over in order to ripen. Here in our central California coastal valley, our nighttime low is usually right around 55 in the summer and tomatoes planted in early April start ripening before July 1. However, the last two summers our lows have been around 50-52. Last summer, even though daytime highs are 80-90, we didn’t get ripe tomatoes until late August and this year we still don’t have any, except for the odd cherry tomato. Lots of fruit on the vines but all green.
Enjoyed your interview with Kristy. Good luck with your new farm.
